Recently the 3rd progress meeting of the Life HyReward Project took place at Water Alliance member Pure Water Group in Sprundel, the Netherlands. The pilot plant is nearing completion and will be shipped to Spain in the coming weeks, where it will demonstrate its viability for generating Blue Energy using reverse electrodialysis (RED) technology during a water desalination process.
Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is a promising technology to generate electrical energy from salt gradients. The Blue Energy generated in this process is a fully renewable and sustainable, CO2-free energy source that can contribute to the EU’s climate goals.
The technology concept that will be demonstrated within the Life HyReward Project uses the RED technology to harvest the energy available in the salinity gradient between seawater RO reject water and treated wastewater from a wastewater treatment plant.
The project, led by Sacyr Water, is being co-developed by a multidisciplinary consortium consisting of Dutch sister companies REDstack and Pure Water Group.
